Locations: Wilmington, DE
Duration: 18-Month Contract
Work Schedule: Hybrid 3 Days per Week In Office (Mandatory)

Position Overview


We are seeking a Senior SmallTalk Software Engineer to join a high-performing Agile development team responsible for supporting and modernizing critical credit card servicing applications used by call centers supporting both consumer and small business credit card customers.

This role will focus on maintaining and enhancing legacy applications built in SmallTalk, while contributing to a long-term modernization initiative that is migrating functionality to a modern Java-based architecture. The ideal candidate will have strong SmallTalk development expertise, solid object-oriented programming knowledge, and experience working within Agile Scrum environments.

As a senior member of the team, you will collaborate closely with developers, architects, product owners, and business partners to deliver high-quality solutions while helping drive the modernization effort through 2027 and beyond.

Key Responsibilities



  • Design, develop, maintain, and enhance applications built using SmallTalk.
  • Support modernization efforts by assisting with the migration of legacy functionality to Java-based applications.
  • Participate in Agile Scrum ceremonies, including sprint planning, daily standups, backlog refinement, reviews, and retrospectives.
  • Deliver assigned user stories and technical enhancements within two-week sprint cycles.
  • Package, deploy, and support SmallTalk applications in non-production environments.
  • Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve application issues while ensuring system stability and performance.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand business requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
  • Contribute to application architecture discussions and software design decisions.
  • Mentor junior team members and provide technical leadership where appropriate.
  • Maintain technical documentation and follow established development standards and best practices.

Required Qualifications



  • 5+ years of hands-on SmallTalk development experience.
  • Strong understanding of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) concepts, design patterns, and software engineering principles.
  • Experience packaging and deploying applications built with SmallTalk in non-production environments.
  • Proven experience working as a software engineer within Agile/Scrum development teams.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn complex business processes and systems.
  • Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to quality and delivery.

Preferred Qualifications



  • Full Stack Java development experience, with emphasis on backend development.
  • Experience supporting or modernizing legacy enterprise applications.
  • Experience with React-based user interfaces.
  • Microsoft SQL Server experience.
  • Experience working in financial services, banking, or credit card servicing environments.
  • Familiarity with application modernization and migration initiatives.
