Senior BI Developer - Cognos & Power BI (Contract-to-Hire)Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced
Business Intelligence Developer with strong hands-on expertise in
IBM Cognos and Microsoft Power BI for an immediate
contract-to-hire opportunity. This role requires a highly independent, well-rounded BI professional who can work directly with business stakeholders, translate requirements into technical solutions, and collaborate effectively with technical teams.
The ideal candidate is not only technically strong, but also a confident communicator who can partner with business users without the need for additional management oversight.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain BI solutions using IBM Cognos and Microsoft Power BI
- Build and support ETL processes, data models, and reporting datasets
- Write and optimize SQL queries to support reporting and analytics needs
- Partner directly with business stakeholders to gather requirements, clarify expectations, and validate results
- Translate business needs into technical specifications and actionable BI solutions
- Support testing, validation, and interpretation of results, including explaining findings to non-technical audiences
- Collaborate with technical team members (data engineers, developers, analysts) on shared initiatives
- Work independently when needed, owning deliverables from requirements through deployment
- Provide ongoing support, enhancements, and troubleshooting for BI reports and dashboards
Required Qualifications
- Strong hands-on experience with IBM Cognos (reporting, modeling, or administration)
- Strong hands-on experience with Microsoft Power BI (reports, dashboards, datasets)
- Solid understanding of ETL concepts and data integration
- Advanced SQL skills (writing, tuning, and troubleshooting queries)
- Proven ability to work directly with business partners without heavy oversight
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work effectively:

- With non-technical business users
- Experience interpreting and validating test results with stakeholders
Preferred / Nice-to-Have Skills
- Experience supporting or modernizing legacy BI platforms
- Familiarity with data warehousing concepts
- Experience working in hybrid technical/business-facing role
