Description Robert Half is seeking an experienced Senior Database Administrator for a company in the Madison area. This role will manage and support enterprise database environments with a primary focus on Microsoft SQL Server. This role is responsible for ensuring database availability, performance, security, and reliability for critical business applications. The position requires a high level of independence, strong troubleshooting ability, and collaboration with development and infrastructure teams.
This is a Direct/Permanent Hire role that requires a hybrid work schedule (3 days onsite) in Madison, WI.Key Responsibilities- Administer, monitor, and maintain Microsoft SQL Server environments to ensure performance, reliability, and availability
- Perform routine database maintenance including backups, restores, patching, upgrades, and health checks
- Diagnose and resolve database performance issues, availability problems, and data integrity concerns
- Design and maintain disaster recovery and business continuity solutions, including regular testing
- Implement and maintain database security and access controls
- Partner with application developers and infrastructure teams to support database-dependent systems
- Support database platform upgrades, modernization efforts, and lifecycle management
- Contribute to operational reporting related to backups, availability, and system health
- Participate in on-call support for production database systems
- Document database standards, procedures, and configurations
- Provide secondary support for Oracle database environments
Requirements Required Skills- Advanced administration and performance tuning for Microsoft SQL Server
- Strong troubleshooting skills in complex database environments
- Experience with backup, recovery, and disaster recovery planning
- Knowledge of database security and auditing practices
- Experience with automation and scripting (such as PowerShell, T-SQL, PL/SQL, or similar tools)
- Familiarity with database monitoring and alerting tools
- Working knowledge of Oracle database administration is preferred
Experience- 7+ years of experience administering enterprise-level database environments
- Strong experience with Microsoft SQL Server in production environments
- Experience supporting high-availability, business-critical systems
- Experience implementing automation or process improvements within database operations
