Mail Engineer (Microsoft 365)

Washington DC - Onsite

12+ Months

Core Responsibilities

A Mail Engineer is primarily responsible for the health and security of the agency’s email infrastructure. Key duties include:

  • System Architecture: Designing and implementing enhancements for messaging services, including Microsoft 365 (O365) and Exchange Online.

  • Security & Compliance: Assessing security vulnerabilities, implementing patches, and managing email blocking/remediation to reduce cyber threats.

  • Mobile Device Management (MDM): Coordinating and managing mail services on mobile platforms, often integrating tools like Microsoft Intune or Apple Business Manager.

  • Troubleshooting (Tier III): Acting as the highest level of support for complex technical outages, mail routing issues, and restoration of services.

  • Operations & Maintenance: Managing distribution groups, role-based access, and performing daily health checks on the messaging environment.

  • Disaster Recovery: Designing and testing high-availability contingencies to ensure communication is never lost during an outage.

Technical Requirements & Qualifications

Because the DOT handles sensitive infrastructure data, the requirements for these roles are typically stringent:

  • Experience: Usually requires 8+ years in Enterprise Messaging Services, with at least 5 years specifically focused on O365.

  • Certifications: Microsoft 365 Certified (Enterprise Administrator Expert) or equivalent certifications in Azure/Exchange.

  • Technical Stack: Proficiency in Active Directory, Proofpoint (or similar email gateways), PowerShell scripting for automation, and Azure Cloud.

  • Clearance: Must be able to obtain a Public Trust clearance (requires U.S. citizenship or residency for at least 3 years).
