Job#: 3033201 Job Description: Network Protocols & Simulation Subject Matter ExpertCandidates must be able to obtain and/or maintain a Department of Defense Secret Security Clearance as a condition and continuation of employmentDescriptionWe are seeking a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in Network Protocols and Simulation to join an Advanced Engineering Group supporting complex, mission-critical network architecture analysis and design. This role serves as the technical lead for designing, modeling, and analyzing high-fidelity network architectures using Riverbed Modeler (OPNET).
The successful candidate will simulate, troubleshoot, and optimize complex network scenarios with a strong emphasis on Physical (L1), Data Link (L2), and Network (L3) layers, including physical medium modeling (Layer 0). This is a remote position with travel.
Key Responsibilities- Network Simulation (OPNET / Riverbed):
- Create, execute, and analyze high-fidelity discrete-event simulations using Riverbed Modeler to evaluate network performance, reliability, scalability, and resiliency.
- Protocol Development & Analysis:
- Serve as a technical SME in routing, switching, and transport protocols. Modify existing models or develop custom models using C/C++ to simulate proprietary, emerging, or complex protocols.
- OSI Layers 0-3 Focus:
- Perform deep technical analysis across:
- Layer 0/1: physical media characteristics, signal propagation, modulation, bit error rates
- Layer 2: MAC protocols, switching, VLANs
- Layer 3: routing and transport technologies such as BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, MPLS, IPv6
- Performance Optimization:
- Analyze simulation outputs to identify bottlenecks, packet loss, latency, and capacity constraints; develop "what-if" scenarios to improve network architectures prior to deployment.
- Architecture Modeling:
- Develop detailed LAN, WAN, and wireless network topologies to validate designs before hardware implementation.
- Technical Reporting:
- Document simulation methodologies, assumptions, scenarios, and results in detailed technical reports for stakeholder review.
QualificationsTypical Education and Experience- Bachelor's degree with 14+ years of related experience
- Master's degree with 12+ years of related experience
- PhD or JD with 9+ years of related experience
Required Skills and Qualifications- Riverbed / OPNET Expertise:
- Expert-level proficiency with Riverbed Modeler, including discrete-event simulation, execution, and results analysis.
- Protocol Expertise (L0-L3):
- In-depth understanding of Ethernet, TCP/IP, routing protocols (BGP, OSPF), and WAN technologies (e.g., MPLS).
- Programming Skills:
- Strong C or C++ development skills for model customization, scripting, and protocol modeling.
- Network Design:
- Experience designing and testing complex WAN, LAN, and WLAN architectures.
- Analytical Skills:
- Strong debugging and analytical capabilities, including packet-level analysis using tools such as Wireshark.
- Education:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience with Riverbed SteelCentral AppResponse or NetPlanner.
- Experience with RF modeling or satellite communication simulations (Layer 0/1).
- Experience supporting high-security or classified network environments.
