Preface

To maximize your impact and leverage the depth of your technical expertise, you should ideally be transitioning from or currently immersed in the Petroleum Refining, Petrochemical, or Large-scale Chemical Processing industries. These high-complexity sectors provide the rigorous environment necessary to master the nuances of high-energy rotating equipment, such as steam turbines and centrifugal compressors, while operating under the stringent safety and regulatory frameworks (like API and ASME standards) required for this role. Your experience in these capital-intensive fields ensures you possess the forensic troubleshooting skills and the Goal Zero safety mindset essential for driving reliability in a high-stakes production facility.

The Opportunity

StaffRight Associates is seeking a high-caliber Senior Rotating Equipment Reliability Engineer to serve as a technical linchpin for a major refinery in the Greater San Francisco Bay Area. This is a critical leadership and technical role focused on safeguarding the mechanical integrity of complex machinery while driving a culture of operational excellence. You will exert a direct impact on facility safety and profitability by architecting long-term reliability frameworks and delivering forensic-level troubleshooting for high-energy rotating systems.

What You’ll Do

  • Champion a Goal Zero safety philosophy, aggressively targeting the elimination of primary containment losses and mitigating systemic operational risks.

  • Synthesize complex mechanical data to provide immediate, actionable technical guidance to inspection teams and business units during critical equipment malfunctions.

  • Spearhead comprehensive Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) and risk assessments to dismantle bad actor cycles and prevent recurring mechanical deficits.

  • Architect strategic reliability roadmaps and define the technical scope for capital initiatives and large-scale facility turnarounds.

  • Engineer innovative maintenance protocols and design modifications that balance environmental compliance with peak equipment operability.

  • Execute high-level technical oversight of external vendors to ensure precision-grade repairs and adherence to stringent machinery specifications.

  • Orchestrate the Management of Change (MOC) process, conducting rigorous engineering reviews for all modifications to rotating assets within your domain.

  • Monitor real-time performance metrics and vibration data to ensure the continuous health and efficiency of turbines, compressors, and high-pressure pumps.

What You Bring

  • Academic Credential: Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.

  • Professional Pedigree: At least 10 years of intensive experience within refinery or petrochemical environments, specifically focused on the design, maintenance, and repair of industrial machinery.

  • Regulatory Mastery: Deep fluency in industry-standard codes, specifically API, ANSI, and ASME.

  • Technical Depth: Demonstrated expertise with steam turbines, centrifugal/positive displacement compressors, lubrication systems, and complex mechanical seals.

  • Forensic Skillset: Proven ability to utilize advanced condition monitoring platforms (e.g., System 1) and perform sophisticated vibration and hydraulic analyses.

  • Operational Agility: A commitment to supporting high-intensity events, including a willingness to participate in on-call rotations and adjusted schedules during major overhauls or turnarounds.

  • Systems Knowledge: Basic proficiency in low-voltage applications and instrument design as they relate to machinery protection and monitoring.
