Associate Director of Research ComputingLocation: Rochester, NY (Hybrid)

Comp Range: $200K-$325K
Summary- The Associate Director of Research Computing leads the strategy, delivery, and modernization of large-scale computational environments. This role oversees high-performance computing (HPC), AI/ML platforms, cloud-based research systems, secure data environments, and complex scientific workloads. The director manages cross-functional engineering teams, drives infrastructure investments, and partners with research groups to enable advanced analytics and compute-intensive projects.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and execute long-term strategy for HPC, AI/ML environments, cloud platforms, scientific software, and secure data systems.
- Direct operations, performance, and lifecycle planning for critical research computing infrastructure.
- Lead systems engineers, research facilitators, and computational specialists supporting system design, user enablement, and security compliance.
- Work directly with research teams to identify requirements, support onboarding, improve workflows, and ensure scalable compute access.
- Oversee planning for compute budgeting, data management, and technical inputs for grant submissions.
- Build funding models, forecast resource needs, and manage multimillion-dollar portfolios for hardware, cloud, storage, and staffing.
- Establish governance processes, service standards, and communication plans to ensure reliability and transparency.
Qualifications- Bachelor's degree required, advanced degree preferred.
- 10+ years in informatics, advanced computing, data-intensive research, or similar fields.
- 5+ years leading technical teams or managing complex computing environments.
- Expertise in HPC architecture, large-scale storage, cloud computing, AI/ML platforms, and secure computing frameworks (e.g., NIST 800-171).
- Strong communication skills and ability to work across engineering teams, technical leadership, and research stakeholders.
- Broad IT experience including architecture, infrastructure engineering, development, analysis, and project management.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $200000.00 - $325000.00/yr.
