Role: Product Design Engineer – Employee Experience AILocation: RemoteDuration: 6 Months Contract (Potential Extension/Conversion Possible) Portfolio RequiredAbout the TeamThe team is building AI-powered internal tools focused on improving how employees and managers work across the organization. The team operates like an internal AI product startup, partnering closely with engineering, design, and HR stakeholders to create next-generation employee experiences powered by AI.This team is heavily focused on AI-native product development and is looking for someone who can help define how AI experiences should feel, behave, and scale across internal products. About the Role This is not a traditional UX or visual design role.The team is looking for a highly collaborative Product Design Engineer / AI Product Designer who can both design and implement AI-powered experiences. The ideal candidate understands how modern AI systems behave and can design workflows around ambiguity, unpredictability, latency, conversational interactions, and agent-based experiences.This person will work directly alongside AI engineers inside the codebase and help define reusable interaction patterns, components, and design systems for AI-native employee tools.The role is highly cross-functional and fast-moving, requiring strong communication skills, systems thinking, and comfort working in ambiguous environments where priorities and product directions evolve quickly. What will you do:- Design and help build AI-powered internal employee tools and workflows
- Create AI-native interaction patterns for conversational and agent-based systems
Design experiences around:- non-deterministic AI behavior
- streaming responses
- multi-step workflows
- latency and edge cases
- AI handoffs and orchestration flows
- Work directly inside the frontend codebase alongside developers
- Build reusable design systems, components, and patterns for internal AI products
- Prototype rapidly using tools like Figma, Claude Code, and modern AI-assisted development workflows
- Collaborate with Product Managers, AI Engineers, Developers, Technical Writers, and Design stakeholders
- Present ideas and influence stakeholders across cross-functional teams
- Help establish internal AI design standards and best practices
What they’re looking for:- 5+ years of experience in:
- Product Design
- Design Engineering
- UX Engineering
- AI Product Design
- Frontend-focused Product Design roles
- Strong portfolio showcasing:
- AI product experiences
- interactive workflows
- design systems
- shipped digital products
- prototypes and/or personal AI projects
- Figma
- React
- HTML/CSS
- Tailwind or modern frontend frameworks
- Design Systems / Component Libraries
- Comfortable contributing directly within a frontend codebase
- Strong understanding of AI-native product design concepts
- Experience designing:
- conversational interfaces
- AI copilots
- agent workflows
- LLM-powered products
- Ability to design through ambiguity and evolving requirements
- Strong communication and presentation skills
- Ability to explain design rationale, tradeoffs, and systems thinking clearly
Preferred / Nice to Have - Experience building or owning formal design systems
- Exposure to tools like Claude, OpenAI APIs, Glean, or similar AI platforms
- Background in HR tech, workplace tools, or employee experience products
- Experience working alongside platform or infrastructure engineering teams
