Job#: 3027619 Job Description: The Utility Scale Energy Storage team is seeking a Project Engineer specializing in Thermal Management for Lithium-Ion Battery Systems. In this role, you will support BESS projects from design through commissioning, collaborating across the organization to deliver best-in-class energy storage solutions.
You will define scope, provide engineering oversight, and serve as a technical resource for crossfunctional teams - combining strong analytical skills with a customer-service mindset for both internal and external stakeholders. The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented problem solver who can identify lessons learned, implement process improvements, and develop tools and standards that maximize BESS performance.
Key Responsibilities - Evaluate design aspects of major components for utility-scale energy storage projects
- Prepare technical scopes of work for thermal management studies and designs for incorporation into contract documents
- Support projects from conception through commissioning, including on-site commissioning activities
- Provide engineering guidance to project teams and oversee external Engineers of Record
- Collaborate with suppliers on equipment sizing, controls, technology compatibility, and integration
- Partner with multi-disciplined teams on problem solving, system integration, and process improvement
- Identify value engineering opportunities and track emerging technologies
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned
Preferred Experience - Subject matter expertise in thermal management for energy storage systems, including one or more of: hydronic HVAC, air-cooled HVAC, battery heat generation/dissipation, or BESS design
- Hands-on experience with VRF, hydronic, and air-side HVAC systems
- Strong knowledge of energy storage technologies, including battery chemistries, power conversion units, and DC/DC converters
- Familiarity with relevant safety standards: UL1973, UL9540, UL9540A, NFPA 855, NFPA 70E, NEC, and applicable IFC/IBC sections
- Effective communicator, able to convey technical concepts to diverse audiences
Education & Experience - B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related field from an ABET-accredited program
- 5+ years of engineering experience
