Summary

Description

We are looking for an experienced Search Engine Optimizer/Marketer to help expand the reach of a digital news platform through thoughtful search strategy, audience insights, and performance-driven content optimization. This contract position with potential for a permanent role is based in Pasadena, California, and is ideal for someone who can blend editorial awareness with technical SEO and emerging answer engine optimization practices. The person in this role will work closely with newsroom and business stakeholders to improve discoverability, strengthen engagement, and adapt content strategy to evolving search behavior.

Responsibilities:
Shape and guide search-focused audience growth efforts by using analytics, trend research, and reader behavior insights to increase visibility and site engagement.
Work with editors, writers, and cross-functional partners to embed SEO and AEO best practices into daily publishing, enterprise stories, and fast-moving news coverage.
Identify timely opportunities to improve content discoverability before, during, and after major events, and recommend practical editorial actions to capture audience interest.
Review performance metrics, search patterns, and competitive activity to turn data into clear recommendations for coverage planning and content optimization.
Create recurring reports that highlight emerging topics, audience opportunities, and areas where content strategy can better align with reader demand.
Assess metadata, page structure, taxonomy, and other on-site elements that influence rankings, and collaborate with product and technology teams on improvements.
Serve as a trusted internal resource on search and answer engine optimization by coaching colleagues and promoting effective editorial standards.
Test new audience development tactics, measure outcomes, and share successful approaches that can be applied more broadly across the organization.
Stay informed on changes in traditional search, AI-driven discovery, and generative answer experiences, translating those developments into actionable strategies.
Contribute to broader initiatives involving digital growth, analytics, marketing, and innovation that support long-term audience expansion.

Requirements

3+ years of experience in SEO, SEM, digital marketing, or audience development, ideally within a content-driven or publishing environment.
Strong knowledge of on-site SEO principles, including metadata optimization, site structure, content discoverability, and search performance analysis.
Familiarity with answer engine optimization (AEO) and evolving AI-powered search experiences.
Ability to interpret analytics and audience behavior data and use findings to influence content or marketing decisions.
Experience collaborating with editorial, marketing, product, or similar cross-functional teams in a fast-paced digital setting.
Background with digital marketing tools such as marketing automation platforms, marketing automation software, email campaign systems, or Marketo is preferred.
Newsroom or news media experience is helpful, but not required.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain search strategy and optimization concepts to a range of stakeholders.

Innovation starts with people.
