Level: Mid-Level

Experience: 3-5 years

Function: Electrical Design / Material Handling Engineering
Position Overview

We are seeking an AutoCAD Electrical Design Drafter to support the design and development of electrical drawing packages for conveyor, sortation, and automated material handling systems.

This role will translate engineering requirements, equipment layouts, vendor documentation, and controls specifications into accurate, buildable electrical drawings supporting permitting, procurement, installation, commissioning, and ongoing system maintenance.

The ideal candidate has hands-on AutoCAD Electrical experience along with exposure to material handling, industrial automation, or conveyor systems. This individual will collaborate with electrical engineers, controls engineers, vendors, integrators, and site teams to ensure drawings are accurate, consistent, and aligned with established electrical standards.
Key Responsibilities
  • Create and maintain electrical drawing packages for conveyor, sortation, and automated material handling systems.
  • Develop power distribution drawings and single-line/three-line diagrams for 480/600 VAC, 120 VAC control power, and 24 VDC systems.
  • Support feeder, branch circuit, disconnect, overcurrent protection, and panel schedule documentation.
  • Prepare permit-ready electrical drawing sets and incorporate revisions resulting from AHJ review comments.
  • Create electrical device, power, and receptacle layouts based on equipment and conveyor drawings.
  • Draft layouts for control panels, disconnects, field devices, and electrical enclosures.
  • Develop e-stop and safety zone layouts, including pull-cords, interlocks, guarding, and safety devices.
  • Produce I/O connection drawings and PLC connection schematics showing device wiring, inputs, outputs, and terminations.
  • Develop network routing and architecture drawings for PLCs, HMIs, IPCs, industrial Ethernet, fieldbus, and low-voltage controls.
  • Create device typicals, installation details, mounting details, and standardized wiring diagrams.
  • Document equipment interlocks and connections between integrated systems such as scanners, scales, and singulators.
  • Incorporate engineering markups, redlines, and design changes while maintaining accurate revision history.
  • Follow established standards for sheet organization, nomenclature, legends, title blocks, references, and revision control.
  • Review and update vendor and integrator drawings to align with project drafting standards.
  • Coordinate with electrical and controls engineers to resolve design questions and ensure drawings accurately reflect engineering requirements.
Required Qualifications
  • 3-5 years of electrical drafting or electrical design experience.
  • Experience supporting material handling, conveyor, sortation, industrial automation, or similar systems.
  • Associate degree or technical diploma in Electrical/Electronics Technology, Drafting and Design, CAD, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Experience creating electrical schematics, power distribution drawings, single-line diagrams, device layouts, I/O drawings, and installation details.
  • Ability to interpret equipment layouts, engineering markups, vendor drawings, and electrical documentation.
  • Experience working within established CAD and electrical drawing standards.
  • Working knowledge of applicable electrical and industrial machinery standards, including NEC/NFPA 70 and NFPA 79.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with EPLAN Electric P8.
  • Familiarity with PLC-based control systems.
  • Knowledge of industrial networks such as EtherCAT and Ethernet/IP.
  • Understanding of e-stop circuits, safety zoning, safety-rated I/O, and equipment interlocks.
  • Experience with document control, PDM systems, or formal drawing release processes.
  • Experience reviewing drawings provided by vendors and system integrators.
  • Familiarity with electrical load calculations, power studies, and panel schedules.
Core Skills
  • Strong AutoCAD Electrical drafting skills.
  • High attention to detail and drawing accuracy.
  • Ability to follow established engineering and CAD standards.
  • Strong organization and document-control skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple drawing packages and revisions.
  • Effective communication and collaboration with engineers, vendors, integrators, and site teams.
  • Ability to identify incomplete or conflicting information and raise design questions early.
Work Environment
  • Primarily an office or hybrid environment involving computer-based CAD design and drafting.
  • Occasional travel to material handling, industrial, or construction sites may be required for field verification, installation support, or commissioning.
  • Ability to work safely in active operational and construction environments and wear required PPE when onsite.
