Position Overview

Caterpillar is seeking an experienced Embedded Software Engineer 3 to join a technical team focused on robotics, autonomosemi-autonomous systems, positioning, and localization.

The engineer will develop production-quality C++ software and localization algorithms that enable autonomous and semi-autonomous machines to determine their position and altitude relative to the surrounding environment.

The role involves working with perception, inertial, and GNSS inputs, developing state-estimation and filtering solutions, and taking algorithms from research/prototype stages through production.

Key Responsibilities

  • Research, design, develop, and implement localization and positioning algorithms.
  • Develop production-quality C++ software for autonomous and semi-autonomous systems.
  • Work on algorithms that allow robotic systems to localize robustly within their environment.
  • Estimate position and altitude using multiple sources, including:
    • Perception-based inputs
    • Inertial measurement inputs
    • GNSS inputs
  • Develop and implement filtering and state-estimation solutions.
  • Participate throughout the software development lifecycle, including:
    • Requirements
    • Architecture
    • Design
    • Documentation
    • Coding
    • Testing
    • Validation
    • Product quality
  • Contribute to requirements generation and localization architecture design.
  • Support functional safety software design and validation.
  • Analyze software/application issues and develop appropriate solutions.

  • Research and prototype new approaches and transition successful concepts into production.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional experience.
  • Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in one of the following:
    • Robotics Engineering
    • Electrical Engineering
    • Computer Engineering
    • Computer Science
  • Candidates with a Master's degree may qualify with 2 years of experience.
  • Associate degrees are not accepted.
  • Internship experience may be considered.
  • Comparable background may include Software Developer Robotics Positioning experience.
