Job#: 3039820
Job Description:
Typical Day in the Role
A typical day may include writing test infrastructure software to install, provision and configure software on prototype Android devices, and then run tests on it. The engineer will validate fixes across builds, collaborate with senior engineers, PMs, and engineering leads to understand priority scenarios, assess release risks, and ensure test coverage aligns with current project needs. They may also flash and configure prototype devices, manage device fleets and test environments, support CI/CD test runs, prepare execution reports, and provide clear diagnostics or recommendations based on test outcomes.
Purpose of the Team: The purpose is to support **Project Solara** -- Microsoft's chip-to-cloud platform for agent-first devices, developed within the Applied Sciences Group -- by ensuring software quality and stability across concept reference devices during the internal self-host (dogfood) program, in which hundreds of Microsoft employees are already using these devices in their daily workflows.
Key projects: This role will contribute to writing and maintaining automated test suites, which provision, configure, and run software on prototype Android devices, and ensuring software quality by preventing defects before release across builds for the Project Solara device family.
Candidate Requirements
Disqualifiers: Candidates without software engineering or test automation experience would be disqualified, as this is a core requirement for the role.
Best vs. Average: The ideal resume would contain significant hands-on experience with provisioning and configuring **Android / AOSP** devices. Because Project Solara devices run the **Microsoft Device Ecosystem Platform (MDEP)** -- an enterprise-grade OS built on AOSP -- Android platform familiarity is a meaningful differentiator, not just a nice-to-have. 5-7 years minimum is required for the role, with additional experience a bonus. Candidate should be able to work independently and with a team.
Android Test Automation Engineer-- Project Solara
Summary
We are seeking a Senior Test Automation Engineer to support software validation across **Project Solara** concept devices, builds, and release environments. Project Solara is Microsoft's chip-to-cloud platform for agent-first devices, spanning portable and in-place form factors (such as the Badge and Desk concept devices) built on the AOSP-based Microsoft Device Ecosystem Platform (MDEP). This role will focus on designing and implementing automated test suites, improving test coverage, analyzing failures, and supporting release readiness.
The engineer will work closely with senior engineers, PMs, and engineering leads. They will own day-to-day test suite design, implementation, execution, and reporting, while contributing to broader automation framework design and implementation with guidance from experienced engineers on the team.
This role will be strongly supported by senior technical team members, who will provide guidance on automation strategy, framework architecture, device workflows, and complex failure analysis.
