Summary

Role Overview

The Payments Analyst will support the Banking Solutions team as they enhance payment capabilities and execute a large-scale banking conversion. This person will work across multiple workstreams, analyze complex data, define requirements, and ensure Product, Technology, and Operations teams can execute seamlessly.
This role requires deep payments domain expertise-particularly ACH, debit cards, checking accounts, wire transfers, deposits, and bill pay-and proven experience supporting retail banking conversions or migrations. The ideal candidate is highly analytical, detail-oriented, proactive, and able to break down complex banking problems into structured work.

Key Responsibilities

Business & Technical Analysis

  • Perform gap analysis to identify missing requirements, risks, and process differences across payments, deposits, and servicing.
  • Refine project plans and deliverables based on data, findings, and stakeholder input.
  • Break down complex datasets and align them to the correct workstreams (Payments, Deposits, Debit Cards, Wires, Bill Pay, Ops, Tech).
  • Ask the right discovery questions - e.g., "What are all the dependencies involved in moving a consumer checking account and its linked payments from one institution to another?"

Requirements & Documentation

  • Gather, clarify, and document business and functional requirements.
  • Write Jira epics, features, user stories, and acceptance criteria.
  • Support process mapping, payment flow mapping, and dependency mapping across systems.
  • Produce use cases, functional specs, process diagrams, and system documentation.

Payments & Banking Conversion Work

  • Support a large-scale banking conversion involving:
    • ACH accounts
    • Debit card migration
    • Checking and deposit accounts
    • Wire payment capabilities
    • Bill pay services
  • Understand the operational, technical, and customer impacts of migrating retail banking accounts.
  • Evaluate edge cases, payment failures, exceptions, and data quality issues tied to conversion of 25,000+ accounts.
  • Work across Product, Tech, and Operations to prepare non-technical requirements (servicing, communications, readiness, customer impact).

Cross-Functional Coordination

  • Track open tasks, RAID items, and workstream dependencies so Product & Technology teams can execute.
  • Partner closely with Product Managers, Operations, and Engineering to align on timelines, priorities, and milestones.
  • Facilitate discussions across payments, deposits, servicing, fraud, risk, and technology.
  • Take initiative to reach out, ask follow-up questions, and chase down answers across business and technical teams.

Required Experience & Skills

Payments & Banking Expertise (Must-Have)

  • 5+ years of experience in banking or payments as a Business Analyst, Payments Analyst, Product Analyst, or Product Owner.
  • Deep domain knowledge across:
    • ACH processing & NACHA rules
    • Wire transfers
    • Retail checking and deposit accounts
    • Debit cards & payment networks
    • Bill pay systems
    • Receivables & consumer payment operations
  • Hands-on experience with banking conversions, migrations, or core banking transitions.

Business Analysis & Project Skills

  • Strong analytical and data-driven mindset; ability to identify gaps and refine plans.
  • Excellent requirements gathering, documentation, and functional design capabilities.
  • Ability to break down problems and turn them into structured workstreams.
  • Hands-on experience writing Jira stories, epics, features, and acceptance criteria.

Technical & Delivery Skills

  • Strong working knowledge of Jira, Confluence, and MS Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Visio).
  • Ability to read payment flows, understand upstream/downstream impacts, and support product mapping.
  • Project management skills: organizing milestones, dependencies, testing, and rollout activities.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple workstreams in a fast-paced delivery environment.

Soft Skills

  • Polished professional with strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Comfortable working across Technology, Product, Finance, Operations, and Leadership.
  • Takes initiative, asks strong follow-up questions, and drives clarity.
  • Ability to simplify complex payment and migration concepts for business stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in retail banking, payments operations, or cash management.
  • Experience in account migrations, conversions, or payment rail transitions.
  • Knowledge of payment networks, bill pay platforms, debit card lifecycle, and bank servicing functions.
  • Exposure to digital banking, CMA (cash management accounts), and payment capability modernization.
