Job Description
We are seeking a Linguist III (FAIR) to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in linguistic analysis, annotation guideline development, and multilingual Responsible AI assessments and a proven ability to analyze large datasets, evaluate AI model errors, and communicate findings to cross-functional partners.
Responsibilities:
- Perform linguistic analyses on large datasets.
- Conduct linguistic error analysis of AI outputs and identify frequent and severe error categories.
- Write and revise guidelines for human annotation and translation projects.
- Perform sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and pragmatics research across many languages, highlighting similarities and differences.
- Execute Responsible AI analyses for toxic language, hate speech, gender bias, and cultural biases in multilingual settings.
- Conduct literature reviews on NLP-adjacent topics and summarize findings.
- Compare vendor linguistic quality, identify error patterns, and provide actionable feedback.
- Provide guidance on typology, morpho-syntax, sociolinguistics, classification, phonetics/phonology, pragmatics, and related areas.
- Collaborate with native speakers in various languages.
- Communicate results of linguistic analyses to engineers and research scientists.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Graduate degree in Linguistics or related field. PhD is a plus.
- Near-native proficiency in a language other than English, preferably Vietnamese, Dutch, Portuguese, or Thai.
- Strong written and spoken communication skills for business and research contexts.
- Solid foundations in conversational dynamics including turn-taking, repairs, interruptions, argumentation, persuasion, and compromising.
- Proficiency in Python and ability to query databases using SQL. Experience with R or similar tools is a plus.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize, plan, track work, and report progress under deadlines.
- Working knowledge of international language-classification standards is valued.
- Experience applying basic NLP techniques.
Preferred Skills:
- Working knowledge in additional languages. Proficiency in a low-resource language is valued.
- Background or specialization in corpus linguistics.
- Experience with field work.
- Education or training in project management.
Experience:
- 0-3 years of relevant experience.
- Experience working cross-functionally with machine learning, NLP, or software engineers, or data scientists.
- Experience contributing to research papers.
- Preferably no known conflicts of interest in machine translation, ASR, TTS, or LLM research.
Important Education Notes:
- A graduate degree in Literature or English is not an appropriate substitution.
- A degree in Computer Science with a specialization in NLP is not an appropriate substitution.
- Must have firm knowledge in language typology, syntax, morphology, sociolinguistics, corpus linguistics, writing systems, pragmatics, and phonology.
