This is an anticipated vacancy - 9/1/2026.

This posting is for an Engineer II in the DDC Unit. The position will be responsible for reviewing plans developed in the DDC Unit, as well as plans submitted by private engineering firms. Develop roadway designs for DDC projects (small TIP, intersection improvement, spot safety, spot mobility, etc.) utilizing Bentley highway design software and workspaces (MicroStation, Geopak, Open Roads Designer (ORD), and Corridor Modeling). Design activities include but are not limited to horizontal and vertical alignment, intersection geometry, earthwork, corridor modeling and plan set production. Duties include incorporating drainage recommendations to plan set and preparation of traffic control, pavement marking, erosion control, and signing plans. Coordinate plan reviews with Raleigh Units to ensure compliance with NCDOT standards and specifications. Prepare workday estimates and coordinate negotiations for roadway projects done by consultants. Assist DDC Engineer and Division Project Development Unit with scoping of projects and preparing estimates. Conduct field inspections of ongoing and proposed projects. Assist with coordination of Utility relocation efforts on assigned projects. Advise lower-level engineers, and other employees, in their day-to-day work to ensure a team approach to their work responsibilities.

General knowledge of civil engineering principles/practices as applied to location, design, maintenance and construction of highways. Moderate to advanced skills in roadway drafting/design; Skilled in the operation of drafting instruments, use of CADD, Micro-Station, Corridor Modeling, and Geo-Pak workstations; computer terminals; and calculators. Assist in technical aspects to accomplish assigned tasks and has the ability to understand roadway plan preparation; provisions; and specifications, take field information and investigation data and prepare, modify or refine roadway designs as directed. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and use sound judgment in making decisions. Must safely perform manual tasks and be capable of working outside in various types of weather, terrain and hours. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle. Safety toe shoes required within 30 days of employment.

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC18 / $63,927 - $111,871

Management prefers applicants with the following:
  • Experience with interpreting and communicating verbally and in writing details of plans, project documents, policies, and procedures to convey information to consultants, department personnel, and others.
  • Experience making recommendations and decisions for simple or complex project developments based on reviewing plans for completeness, compliance and engineering principles, standards, and design needs.
  • Knowledge of time and budget management practices and requirements needed for the development of multiple projects with minimal supervision.
  • Collaboration and coordination with private engineering firms to include technical writing, public speaking and working with persons of various technical and nontechnical educational backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of NCDOT design principles, AASTHO guidelines and all phases of preparation of NCDOT preliminary plans, right of way plans and construction plans.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements

May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
