We are seeking a
Software Engineer to build and deploy software that powers
automation machines and/or large-scale device or robotic fleets. This is a
software-first role-
controls, PLC, or traditional automation experience is not required.
The focus of this position is on
distributed systems,
fleet-wide software deployment,
orchestration, and
operational reliability. You will develop production services that manage machine behavior at scale, coordinate rollouts, handle failures, and ensure systems remain observable and resilient in real-world environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop backend services that orchestrate and manage automation machines or device fleets
- Build systems for fleet-wide deployment, configuration, updates, and rollout management
- Implement fault detection, recovery workflows, and resilient system behavior
- Develop and maintain APIs and service interfaces used by machines and supporting systems
- Build strong observability into services (logging, metrics, alarms, tracing)
- Operate production systems, including on-call support, incident response, and post-incident improvement
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (software, systems, hardware, integration, operations)
- Write maintainable, well-tested code and participate in code reviews and design reviews
Required Qualifications
- Professional experience developing production services in Java and/or Kotlin
- Experience working with distributed systems or service-oriented architectures
- Strong understanding of reliability concepts such as timeouts, retries, idempotency, and failure isolation
- Experience developing and operating cloud-based services (AWS or equivalent)
- Familiarity with monitoring, alerting, and troubleshooting production systems
- Solid computer science fundamentals (data structures, concurrency, networking basics)
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience building or operating software for fleets, automation platforms, IoT systems, or large distributed device environments
- Experience with deployment pipelines and release strategies (e.g., phased rollouts, canary deployments)
- Hands-on experience with AWS services such as:
- Compute and orchestration platforms
- Messaging and event-driven systems
- Storage and database solutions
- Monitoring and logging tools
- Experience with event-driven or message-based architectures
- Exposure to systems that interact with physical devices or edge environments (software-level interaction only)
What Success Looks Like
- You can ship software reliably across a large population of machines or devices
- Systems you build fail gracefully, recover automatically, and are easy to debug
- You proactively improve reliability, scalability, and operational maturity
- You design services that perform consistently under imperfect, real-world conditions
Ideal Candidate Profile (Recruiting Notes)
Strong fits include engineers with experience in:- Fleet or device management platforms
- Large-scale distributed backend systems
