Job Title: Maintenance Mechanic
Job Location: Abbott Park, IL
Job Type: Contract
Job Overview:
Pay Range: $30.31hr - $34.31hr

Responsibilities:

  • Perform preventive and predictive maintenance to ensure plant electrical and mechanical systems operate safely and reliably.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and upgrade production, packaging, and filling line equipment.
  • Serve as a technical resource to manufacturing, engineering, and plant support teams.
  • Repair gear heads, reducers, and various types of pumps including centrifugal and positive displacement pumps.
  • Install and maintain piping systems including black iron, stainless steel, copper, PVC, and flexible tubing.
  • Install and replace mechanical components such as seals, bearings, O-rings, gaskets, belts, chains, rollers, sprockets, and gears.
  • Perform welding and fabrication using stainless steel, carbon steel, aluminum, and sheet metal materials.
  • Cut and shape metal using plasma cutters or torches.
  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical systems including motors, wiring, lighting, and control components.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics and wiring diagrams to perform installations and repairs.
  • Adjust and maintain high-speed filling, packaging, and conveying equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and repair barcode scanners and inkjet printing systems.
  • Perform machine adjustments on seamers, bottle sealers, cappers, and rotary sterilizers.
  • Respond to equipment alarms and troubleshoot production issues to minimize downtime.
  • Maintain shop cleanliness and ensure proper upkeep of tools and equipment.
  • Track maintenance activities, spare parts inventory, and material requirements.
  • Support production goals by addressing equipment failures and implementing corrective actions.
  • Escort and assist external contractors performing maintenance activities in production areas.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience in maintenance of manufacturing or production equipment preferred.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including overtime and weekends as needed.

Technical Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, pumps, piping, and fabrication techniques.
  • Proficiency in electrical troubleshooting including motors, wiring, and control systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and technical diagrams.
  • Experience with high-speed manufacturing and packaging equipment.
  • Familiarity with precision tools such as micrometers, calipers, multimeters, and machining equipment (lathe, mill).
  • Knowledge of National Electrical Code (NEC) standards.
  • Experience with welding, metal fabrication, and equipment repair.

  • Ensure compliance with FDA (GMP), USDA, OSHA, and company regulations and policies.
  • Follow all safety procedures and maintain a safe working environment.

Soft Skills:

  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good communication and coordination skills.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine maintenance tasks to prevent equipment failure and unsafe conditions.
  • Maintain strong presence on the production floor to support operations.
  • Participate in continuous improvement and throughput initiatives.
  • Maintain knowledge of production equipment setup and operation.
