Position: Senior Principal Cyber Systems Engineer

Location: San Antonio, TX

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Cyber Systems Engineer to support the development of advanced defense and mission-critical systems. This role is responsible for ensuring cybersecurity requirements are integrated throughout the system lifecycle, from concept and architecture through implementation, testing, assessment, and deployment.

The Cyber Systems Engineer will work closely with systems engineering, software, cybersecurity, and program teams to implement cybersecurity protections, assess risk, support compliance activities, and ensure cyber survivability requirements are incorporated into system designs.

This position supports complex programs operating in an Agile and DevSecOps environment and requires collaboration across multiple engineering disciplines and stakeholder organizations.

Key Responsibilities

Cyber Systems Engineering Support

Provide technical guidance and engineering decisions to ensure products and technical milestones meet cybersecurity requirements.

Collaborate with systems engineers, architects, and Integrated Product Teams (IPTs) to achieve mission objectives and cybersecurity compliance.

Support the development and enhancement of mission-critical defense systems.

Participate in cross-functional teams consisting of government, contractor, supplier, and cybersecurity stakeholders.

Ensure system compliance with applicable cybersecurity standards and regulations, including but not limited to:

CNSSI 1253

DoD 8570/8140

DoD 8510 (RMF)

AFI 17-101

Develop and propose cybersecurity architecture solutions with traceability to program requirements.

Provide implementation guidance and technical oversight across engineering teams.

Develop and maintain cybersecurity engineering processes, procedures, and standards.

Participate in technical reviews involving:

Computer systems

Digital communication systems

Networks

System architectures

Security implementation plans

Conduct cyber attack surface analyses and recommend risk mitigation strategies.

Support cybersecurity assessments, penetration testing activities, security reviews, and authorization efforts.

Contribute to program planning, schedules, milestones, and cybersecurity metrics.

Research and solve complex technical cybersecurity challenges.

Apply analytical methods to evaluate cybersecurity effectiveness and implementation.

Support engineering review boards and technical decision-making processes.

Operate effectively in Agile and DevSecOps environments.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree with 8 years of experience, Master's degree with 6 years, or PhD with 4 years of experience in one of the following:

Systems Engineering

Cybersecurity Engineering

Computer Engineering

Computer Science

Strong understanding of systems engineering principles, theories, and concepts.

Experience utilizing:

NIST SP 800-160 System Security Engineering principles, and/or

System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) methodologies.

Experience in one or more of the following systems engineering disciplines:

Requirements decomposition

Requirements derivation

Requirements flow-down and traceability

System architecture

High-level and detailed design

Implementation

Integration and testing

Verification and validation

Experience supporting RMF Assessment and Authorization artifact development in accordance with NIST SP 800-37.

Ability to obtain program-required special access.

Ability to obtain an IASAE Level II certification (CISSP preferred) within six months of hire in accordance with DoDI 8570/8140.

Ability to work independently with general guidance from senior leadership.

Preferred Qualifications

IASAE Level III certification (ISSEP, ISSAP) in accordance with DoDI 8570/8140.

Software Assurance experience.

Expertise with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and tools such as:

Cameo Systems Modeler

Expertise with requirements management tools such as:

IBM DOORS

Knowledge of:

Cybersecurity systems engineering practices

Network technologies

DoD development lifecycles and methodologies

IT infrastructure monitoring and management

Enterprise applications and security architectures

Experience with containerized software systems and DoD DevSecOps Reference Design principles.

Experience supporting cybersecurity accreditation activities within digital engineering environments.

Experience authoring and maintaining cybersecurity documentation, including:

Cybersecurity Strategies

System Security Plans (SSPs)

Continuous Monitoring Plans

Security Assessment Plans (SAPs)

Experience planning, designing, implementing, testing, and delivering systems with Cybersecurity or Information Assurance requirements.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Strong stakeholder management, collaboration, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.

Experience partnering with program managers and customer representatives to achieve program objectives.

Experience managing engineering efforts within Agile and DevSecOps process frameworks.

Demonstrated success solving complex multidisciplinary engineering challenges.

Ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders and navigate competing requirements and priorities.
