Role Overview
The Data Platform Engineer role combines traditional database administration with modern data platform and solution engineering. This position is responsible for the day-to-day operation of critical on-premises and cloud data platforms, and the design and delivery of scalable, cloud-native data solutions. The role will be critical in a large-scale migration to a new infrastructure platform, ensuring the successful deployment of new SQL Server environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, deploy, and manage relational and analytical data platforms across on-premises and cloud environments, with a mix of SQL Server and Azure.
- Perform hands-on, day-to-day database administration activities, including backups, restores, patching, and upgrades.
- Monitor and optimize database performance, applying strategies such as indexing and partitioning.
- Implement monitoring and alerting for databases and data platforms using automation.
- Design and maintain high availability and disaster recovery strategies.
- Lead data migration efforts, moving data between databases and preparing for future cloud migrations.
- Apply DevOps and infrastructure as code principles, using tools like Terraform for automated deployments.
- Partner with application teams, data architects, and infrastructure engineers to deliver reliable data solutions.
Required Qualifications
Education: A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field is required.
Experience: 5+ years of experience supporting and engineering data platforms, with significant experience in migrating data between databases.
Technical Skills:- Extensive experience with SQL Server administration and Azure SQL.
- Proficiency in SQL and scripting languages such as PowerShell, Bash, or Python.
- Experience with performance tuning, indexing, partitioning, high availability, backup, and recovery.
- Experience with infrastructure as code tools like Terraform.
- Experience implementing monitoring through automation.
Preferred Qualifications
- A professional certification in SQL Server or Azure is ideal.
- Experience with data virtualization platforms.
- Experience with DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines.
- Experience supporting analytical, reporting, or enterprise middleware platforms.
- Experience with SAP HANA or other in-memory databases.
Compensation & Benefits
The anticipated salary range for this position is $120,000 to $160,000 annually.
