Description:
Job Description: Platform & Security Engineer (Contract)

Location: Charlotte, NC
Role Type: Contract
Level: Mid-Senior
About the Role

We are looking for a highly skilled Platform & Security Engineer to help design, build, and operate a secure, scalable enterprise Data Private Cloud (DPC) platform. This hybrid role combines platform engineering, data-service enablement, and security automation. You will build end-to-end workflows, reinforce secure-by-default patterns, and partner with cross-functional teams to deliver resilient data services at scale.

This role is ideal for an engineer who is comfortable working across Kubernetes/OpenShift, data platforms, security operations, and automation.
Responsibilities
Platform Engineering
  • Design and automate workflows for provisioning, deployment, and operational support of data services on Kubernetes/OpenShift.
  • Build and maintain core platform capabilities supporting technologies such as Spark, Iceberg, Ranger, Sparkflow, and Superset.
  • Develop resilient, scalable architectures for containerized workloads and distributed data processing pipelines.
  • Improve platform reliability through automation, runbooks, SRE best practices, and standardized operational processes.
Security Engineering & SecOps
  • Build security automation for data access control, encryption, masking, tokenization, and other protection mechanisms.
  • Integrate security into the SDLC through CI/CD pipeline controls, infrastructure-as-code, and automated governance.
  • Contribute to security monitoring, audit logging, alerting, and compliance workflows, including policy management and evidence collection.
  • Partner with platform, security, and DevOps teams to enhance incident readiness, operational resilience, and risk reduction.
Hands-On Development & Collaboration
  • Design, implement, test, and document Python-based services and automation tools supporting platform operations.
  • Collaborate with architects, platform/DevOps engineers, and data product teams to deliver end-to-end solutions.
  • Participate in design reviews, architecture discussions, and threat modeling sessions that shape secure deployment patterns.
Minimum Qualifications (5+ years experience)
Core Skills
  • Strong Python development experience for automation and service development at enterprise scale.
  • Solid understanding of fundamental security practices (least privilege, defense-in-depth, secure SDLC).
  • Experience working with container platforms such as Kubernetes or OpenShift (OCP).
  • Hands-on experience integrating security into CI/CD pipelines.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively across engineering and security teams.
Technical Background
  • Familiarity with data security patterns including encryption, access control, tokenization/masking, and secrets management.
  • Understanding of DevOps concepts such as automated testing, release automation, environment promotion, and operational support.
  • Exposure to data ecosystem concepts including data governance, metadata services, and large-scale batch/stream processing.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with open-source data ecosystem tools: Ranger, Keycloak, Spark, Iceberg, DataHub, etc.
  • Knowledge of S3-compatible object storage and distributed data processing patterns.
  • Familiarity with observability stacks (logs, metrics, traces), telemetry, and operational dashboards.
  • Experience with incident response, post-incident review processes, and operational resilience improvements.
  • Exposure to API design and/or UI development (e.g., React.js) for admin or operations tooling.
What Success Looks Like
  • Automated, reliable workflows that simplify deploying and operating data services on OCP/Kubernetes.
  • Built-in security controls and guardrails that ensure compliance, least privilege, and auditability by default.
  • Measurable improvements in platform reliability and reduced operational overhead through standardization and automation.
  • Strong alignment and collaboration across platform engineering, data teams, and security stakeholders.
