Summary

Operational Technology Systems Administrator

Location: Hybrid (3 days onsite per week in the Northwest Metro, MN area; 2 days remote)

Compensation: $100,000-145,000, depending on experience, qualifications, and level placement within the role.

Position Overview

We are seeking an Operational Technology Systems Administrator to support and enhance the technology platforms that enable critical utility and grid operations. This is a unique opportunity to join an organization that is investing heavily in modern grid technologies, renewable energy integration, battery storage, advanced distribution systems, and operational automation.

This role serves as a key technical resource responsible for the administration, optimization, support, and continuous improvement of operational technology environments. Working closely with engineering, operations, cybersecurity, and technology teams, you will help ensure mission-critical systems remain reliable, secure, and available.

Unlike a traditional IT infrastructure position, this role focuses on the systems that directly support operational continuity and real-time utility operations. The ideal candidate is comfortable navigating both technical and business challenges, can work independently, and understands the importance of technology in highly available, operational environments.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Technology Administration & Support

  • Administer and support critical operational technology platforms used to monitor, manage, and maintain utility operations.

  • Monitor system performance, availability, and health to ensure reliable day-to-day operations.

  • Troubleshoot application, integration, and infrastructure issues and perform root cause analysis.

  • Coordinate and implement software updates, patches, upgrades, and maintenance activities.

  • Work closely with vendors and internal subject matter experts to resolve production issues.

  • Participate in an on-call rotation supporting business-critical systems.

System Configuration & Business Process Improvement

  • Configure and optimize operational technology applications to align with business and operational requirements.

  • Partner with engineering and operations teams to gather requirements and translate them into technology solutions.

  • Support testing, validation, and deployment of new functionality and system enhancements.

  • Evaluate opportunities to improve workflows, reliability, reporting, and overall system effectiveness.

  • Maintain technical documentation, support procedures, and configuration records.

Project Delivery & Modernization Initiatives

  • Lead or contribute to projects focused on expanding and modernizing operational technology capabilities.

  • Support implementation of technology initiatives involving grid management, outage response, distributed energy resources, battery storage, and field operations.

  • Coordinate change management, testing activities, and user acceptance processes.

  • Provide guidance on system capabilities, future enhancements, and technology best practices.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to ensure successful project outcomes.

Preferred Technical Background

Candidates may come from utility, energy, manufacturing, industrial automation, power generation, renewable energy, or other critical infrastructure environments.

Experience with one or more of the following is highly desirable:

  • SCADA systems

  • Advanced Distribution Management Systems (ADMS)

  • Outage Management Systems (OMS)

  • Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems (DERMS)

  • Utility operational technology platforms

  • Schneider Electric, OSI, AspenTech, or similar platforms

  • Microsoft Windows Server environments

  • SQL Server and database integrations

  • OT/IT integrations

  • Industrial networking concepts

  • Utility communications technologies

  • Power BI or similar reporting tools

Qualifications

Required

  • Associate degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering Technology, or a related field with 5+ years of relevant experience; OR

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field with 3+ years of relevant experience.

  • Experience supporting operational technology, industrial systems, critical infrastructure technologies, or enterprise applications in a production environment.

  • Experience working directly with business users, operations teams, engineers, or technical stakeholders.

  • Working knowledge of servers, networking fundamentals, system integrations, and enterprise software environments.

  • Valid driver's license.

Preferred

  • Experience supporting electric utility, power generation, transmission, distribution, renewable energy, or industrial operations environments.

  • Experience with SCADA, ADMS, OMS, DERMS, AMI, or related technologies.

  • Understanding of electrical grid operations or critical infrastructure systems.

  • Experience gathering and documenting requirements, performing testing, and supporting technology implementations.

  • Strong vendor management and relationship-building skills.

  • Ability to work independently and act as the primary owner of critical systems.

  • Experience balancing operational support, project delivery, and continuous improvement responsibilities.

What Success Looks Like

This position is well-suited for someone who enjoys wearing multiple hats and being a trusted technical resource. Successful candidates are comfortable troubleshooting complex issues, collaborating across departments, managing vendor relationships, and driving technology improvements that directly support critical operations.

You will play a key role in supporting technology that impacts real-world operations, service reliability, outage response, and the continued modernization of the energy grid.

Work Environment

  • Hybrid schedule consisting of three days onsite and two days remote each week.

  • Participation in an on-call rotation is required.

  • Periodic after-hours support may be necessary during planned maintenance, weather-related events, outages, or emergency situations.

  • Candidates must reside within one hour of the Northwest Metro office to support operational and on-call responsibilities.
