Senior Mainframe Engineer

Location: Remote (EST hours)

Employment Type: Contract

Pay Range: $74-79 W2

Role Overview

The Mainframe Engineer is a senior-level technologist responsible for developing, maintaining, and supporting enterprise mainframe applications used in financial systems. This role requires hands-on experience with COBOL-based environments, including both batch and online processing, and the ability to independently analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve complex system issues. The engineer will work with the hiring manager and cross-functional teams, contributing to system enhancements while ensuring data integrity, stability, and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop, maintain, and support mainframe applications using COBOL, CICS, JCL, and DB2.
  • Work with TSO, Expediter, Abend-AID, and related debugging tools.
  • Analyze business requirements and translate them into technical designs and solutions.
  • Perform performance tuning, system optimization, and root-cause analysis.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex batch and online processing issues.
  • Implement system enhancements while ensuring data integrity and compliance.
  • Produce technical documentation and design specifications.
  • Collaborate with team members, stakeholders, and the hiring manager.
  • Utilize the full software development lifecycle to deliver and enhance mainframe solutions.
  • Create and execute unit tests to proactively identify defects.
  • Work autonomously while providing technical guidance and oversight to peers.
Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field. Equivalent professional experience may be considered.

Experience: 8+ years of related mainframe engineering experience.

Technical Skills:
  • Extensive hands-on experience with COBOL, DB2, CICS, JCL, TSO, Expediter, and Abend-AID.
  • A strong understanding of batch and online processing in enterprise mainframe environments.
  • The ability to independently analyze and resolve complex technical issues.
  • Problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
First-Month Priorities
  • Complete onboarding and gain an understanding of core applications and modules.
  • Learn system architecture, standards, and processes.
  • Begin contributing by taking on smaller enhancement or support efforts.
  • Progress toward independently handling more complex projects and problem resolution.
