Role Overview
The Mainframe Engineer is a senior-level technologist responsible for developing, maintaining, and supporting enterprise mainframe applications used in financial systems. This role requires hands-on experience with COBOL-based environments, including both batch and online processing, and the ability to independently analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve complex system issues. The engineer will work with the hiring manager and cross-functional teams, contributing to system enhancements while ensuring data integrity, stability, and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, maintain, and support mainframe applications using COBOL, CICS, JCL, and DB2.
- Work with TSO, Expediter, Abend-AID, and related debugging tools.
- Analyze business requirements and translate them into technical designs and solutions.
- Perform performance tuning, system optimization, and root-cause analysis.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex batch and online processing issues.
- Implement system enhancements while ensuring data integrity and compliance.
- Produce technical documentation and design specifications.
- Collaborate with team members, stakeholders, and the hiring manager.
- Utilize the full software development lifecycle to deliver and enhance mainframe solutions.
- Create and execute unit tests to proactively identify defects.
- Work autonomously while providing technical guidance and oversight to peers.
Required Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field. Equivalent professional experience may be considered.
Experience: 8+ years of related mainframe engineering experience.
Technical Skills:- Extensive hands-on experience with COBOL, DB2, CICS, JCL, TSO, Expediter, and Abend-AID.
- A strong understanding of batch and online processing in enterprise mainframe environments.
- The ability to independently analyze and resolve complex technical issues.
- Problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
First-Month Priorities
- Complete onboarding and gain an understanding of core applications and modules.
- Learn system architecture, standards, and processes.
- Begin contributing by taking on smaller enhancement or support efforts.
- Progress toward independently handling more complex projects and problem resolution.
