City Trends

As of the end of October, 15 of the top 25 cities for total tech job postings showed double digit growth year-over-year, with Phoenix (31.7%), San Diego (+29.4%), Charlotte (+27.6%), Boston (+25.6%), Los Angeles (+23.3%), Chicago (+21.9%) and Tampa (+21%) growing more than 20%. Houston (+45.6%) and Miami (+33.6%) led the way with massive year-over-year growth. Only four cities on the list showed a year-over-year loss, in good news for tech demand, especially when weighed against consistent news of layoffs in Silicon Valley and Big Tech.

Houston, which we cover in one of this edition’s Tech Hub Highlights, benefits from the presence of major tech companies like Asurion, AWS, Fiserv, Dell, IBM and Siemens, as well as a range of VC-backed startups. Miami has been attracting more startups in recent years (Pipe, REEF Technology and Papa) thanks to sustained investment and a tight-knit group of local founders, and more tech talent thanks to strong salary growth.

It’s also worth noting that only three of the top 10 cities in total job postings, San Francisco, New York and Atlanta, lag behind 2019 tech job posting numbers, while all others sit above or well above that level. In addition to the other factors affecting these three locations over the past few years, it’s an indication that tech demand in cities across the country remains healthier than even the recent 2019 high-water mark.

For organizations of all types, these numbers serve as a reminder that, even as the economy contracts, there is still a great need for technology talent across many different industries. Especially for the many companies that were pushed into an accelerated digitization, these efforts likely cannot be stopped mid-stream, regardless of the economic environment, and organizations will continue to need technology teams to manage increasingly digitized daily operations.

State Trends

The continuing story on a state level is the emergence of Texas as a key player in terms of tech presence and tech job growth. The Lone Star State was the only state with five cities in the top 25 for tech job postings, and remains second only to California in total postings (and nearly 200,000 postings above New York in the #3 slot). While traditional tech hubs like Silicon Valley and New York City struggle with a workforce reckoning (more than 85,000 tech workers have been laid off as of late November 2022, according to Crunchbase, with most coming from Big Tech and tech startups), inflation squeezes people in higher cost-of-living states and as flexible work becomes the norm, these trends mean Texas is well-positioned to continue its rise as a tech destination for employers and technology professionals.

In the top 20 states for overall tech job postings, all showed some level of growth, ranging from 0.3% in Minnesota to a whopping 33.8% increase in Massachusetts. California, Texas and New York took the top three spots, with Florida and Virginia rounding out the top five. Notable growth stories included Florida (+32.8%), Pennsylvania (+27.6%) and Arizona (27.3%).
